South Thailand braces for more rain

The Meteorological Department of Thailand says more rain is expected in the southern regions of the nation this week. The warning covers the Southern peninsula from Chumphon and Suratthani provinces all the way down to the border with Malaysia.

A Meteorological Department bulletin says the region will be hit by torrential storms and the Krabi-Phuket region along the Andaman Sea coast is expected to be particularly wet. The warning notes that flash floods are a distinct likelihood in this region.

The warning also stated that the northeast monsoon is expected to whip up waves of up to three metres in height in the Gulf of Thailand. The bad weather is expected to last until Friday.

Thai government spokesperson Sansern Kaewkamnerd told media sources yesterday that prime-minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had asked emergency services personnel and public employees in the south to be ready to help out as needed. Heavy rainstorms which began at the beginning of the month have caused widespread flooding right across the southern region.

The floods severed the main highway to the south last week and the State Railway of Thailand suspended services south of Hua Hin due to flooded tracks. 12GO ASIA says road and rail connections have now been restored, but storms might cause minor delays when travelling.
