Work commences on expansions to Sihanoukville Airport

The company holding the concession to operate international airports in Cambodia has announced the start of an upgrade at Sihanouk Airport. The upgrade will see the passenger terminal doubled in size and the runway widened to provide additional space for a taxiway.

Franchisee Cambodia Airports stated that the two expansions should be completed by early next year at the very latest. The terminal building is being refurbished and its floor capacity expanded out to 4,800-metres².

Cambodia Airports director Khek Norinda explained that the additional space would improve the general passenger experience at Sihanoukville’s airport. He said it would allow for extra check-in counters and improved baggage handling as well as more shops and food and drink concessions.

Cambodian Civil Aviation spokesperson Sinn Chanserey Vutha noted that the current 2,500-metre landing strip was long enough for larger aircraft, but not wide enough for them to turn round easily. The runway’s tarmac will also be reinforced for heavier aircraft.

Sihanouk Airport was called Sihanoukville Airport until recently. It mainly handles seasonal and charter flights from nearby Asian nations as well as domestic flights from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Buses run more frequently on domestic routes and tickets for Giant Ibis’s buses are an option on 12GO ASIA’s reservations pages.
