At a meeting presided over by prime-minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha, the cabinet decided to follow a recommendation proposed by the State Enterprise Commission. The commission had pointed out that not having a dedicated railway regulator meant the nation’s railway network was not being utilised to its maximum potential.
The commission also noted efficiency might entice goods transporters to opt for rail. Around 80 per cent of the nation’s cargoes are transported by road at present. The commission noted that shipping by rail was better for the environment and came with other benefits too.
Thailand’s passenger train network has four principal routes. One to Chiang Mai and the north, two to the northeastern towns of Nong Khai and Ubon Ratchathani, and one to Hat Yai and the southern border with Malaysia. 12GO ASIA provides reservations services for seats and sleeping berths on these routes.
