Bangkok extends New Year operating hours for urban trains

Thailand’s transport-minister has released a statement saying Bangkok’s train services will operate for two hours longer on New Year’s Eve. Akhom Termpittayapaisit said services on the MRT Metro, the Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link and the BTS Skytrain would stop at 02:00 on the morning of 1 January 2017.

The minister added that it was the government’s New Year’s gift to partygoers and those heading for candle-light vigils such as that at Sanam Luang Park. The extended operating hours come on top of a previous announcement saying trains would be free from midday on the 31 December to midday on the following day.

The transport-minister said rail and station operators have been instructed to ensure there are enough trains and they run frequently. Security personnel have been asked to enhance their presence and ensure all travellers are kept safe and sound.

Both Bangkok urban and intercity trains and buses are expected to be busy for the duration of the New Year holidays. 12GO ASIA advises people planning trips to the beach or up to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Loei that they should not leave making reservations until the last minute.
