Thailand rail company to refurbish third class carriages

Thailand’s national rail company has announced a timetable which will see third class carriages renovated to cater to the needs of 21st century travellers. The governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) stated that the refurbishment would be completed by the agency’s 120th birthday on 26 March 2017.

Governor Wuthichart Kalyanamitr explained decking and toilets in 148 carriages are set for replacement. He said the carriages would get a new lick of paint and any windows or window shutters which were damaged or broken would be fixed.

The governor added that when the carriages had been revamped they would be utilised on trains serving routes between Bangkok and central Thai locations. He said they would also replace third class carriages on express trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Ubon Ratchathani and Sungai Kolok.

The SRT has already reconditioned 20 carriages and these were unveiled at a recent ceremony in Bangkok. It was full steam ahead after the ceremony with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha boarding a special express for a short jaunt from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station.

12GO ASIA provides ticket reservations services for seats and sleeping berths on the bulk of the trains operated by the SRT.
