Phnom Penh authorities conduct airport rail link feasibility study

Transport ministry officials in Cambodia are currently conducting a study to assess the viability of building a rail link from Phnom Penh to its airport. Transport and Public Works minister Sun Chanthol said that if the project gets the go ahead it will provide airline passengers with the means to check in before they even reach the airport.

He carried on by saying that if the link looked like it would work and would also help tourists and business travellers skip Phnom Penh’s infamous traffic jams, it would be implemented. He explained that the airport was only one-kilometre from the recently reopened Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville line and it should be possible to build a branch line connecting the two.

Toll Royal Railways has a 30-year franchise to restore and operate train services in Cambodia. Mr Chanthol noted that his delegates were currently holding talks with Royal Railways about building the connector line. He finished off by saying the management team at Phnom Penh Airport were looking into where the best location for an onsite railway station would be.
