Thai banks and government offices shut for public holiday on Monday

Tomorrow is Constitution Day in Thailand and, as it falls on a Saturday this year, Monday is the substitution day for the national holiday. The 10 December marks the proclamation of the nation's first permanent constitution in 1932 and the end of the absolute monarchy.

Democracy Monument is on Bangkok’s Ratchadamnoen Klang Road and was built to commemorate the historic day. The actual day is usually marked by low-key parades in Bangkok and at provincial halls throughout the kingdom.

For tourists, the only outward sign that Monday is a bank holiday will be the fact that most banks and government offices are shut for the day. The closure does not apply to currency exchange offices in all the main tourist hubs and these will be open as normal.

The public holiday on Monday effectively gives a three-day weekend. Public transport is expected to be busy with Thais taking seaside breaks or going back to their hometowns.

As is the case with all major holidays, 12GO ASIA recommends pre-booking tickets for travel if planning an excursion or going to another destination in the country. We offer multiple ticketing options for destinations as far apart as Hat Yai and Malaysia, Nong Khai, Mae Sai and Chiang Mai.
