Torrential rain lashes provinces in the far south of Thailand

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and transport disruptions over the past few days in the southernmost provinces of Thailand. The storms began on Thursday and although they have abated in Surat Thani, the rest of the provinces down as far as the Malaysian border are still being pounded.

Some roads have flooded in the region and the State Railway of Thailand has had to tweak its schedules to take the weather into account. Skippers of fishing boats, passenger ferries and tourist cruise boats have also been urged to keep an eye on the weather and not set sail if conditions are unfavourable.

A spokesperson for prime-minister Prayut Chan-o-cha says disaster and emergency services personnel have been deployed to assist people living in flooded regions of the south. The storms have hit provinces including Krabi, Phuket, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla.

Thailand Meteorological Department says the adverse weather is likely to continue for a few days yet and residents and tourists in the region may be affected by flash floods and choppy seas. 12GO ASIA says bus and train services are mostly operating normally, but passengers should allow plenty of time to reach their departure stations.
