Thai tourists cheer arrival of dawn frost on Doi Inthanon

Thai tourists were on hand to welcome the first dawn frost of the winter on the nation’s highest mountain yesterday. Grass, plants and weeds beside the road to the summit of Doi Inthanon were dusted with hoary frost as the sun slowly rose on the horizon.

Doi Inthanon National Park chief ranger Rueng Hiranwong said the temperature had bottomed out at 3°C on Sunday night to provide the rare spectacle of ground frost in a tropical country. He noted that the frost was especially prevalent between the marker stones of 42km and 47km on the summit highway and it was thronged with excited tourists.

Some of the tourists had reportedly been waiting for several days for the thermometer to drop low enough to create the phenomenon. Doi Inthanon is 2,565 metres high and located in the Chomthong District of Chiang Mai Province.

The mount is one of the northern Thai province’s most famous attractions and high up on the itineraries of Thai and international visitors. This is especially true during the cold season when frost is likely to occur.

Travellers heading up to Chiang Mai, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son or Pai will enjoy the convenience of the 12GO advance ticket reservations system. Our image of the frost was supplied with courtesy by Khaosod.
