UK Prince William jets into Hanoi for wildlife conference

The UK’s Prince William landed at Hanoi Airport yesterday and was due to attend a seminar on the global trade in illegal wildlife today. In the UK, Kensington Palace released a statement on Tuesday saying the heir to the British throne believed the Vietnamese people would empathise with his aim of preserving the planet’s rarest creatures for posterity.

After meetings with prime-minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and other leading dignitaries yesterday, Prince William arrived for the International Wildlife Trade Conference today. The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is staging the third edition of the annual conference in Hanoi.

The aim of the conference is to maintain unity among global leaders in the fight to stamp out the illicit trade in endangered animals and save them from extinction. The prince is attending in his capacity as the United for Wildlife Foundation’s president.

Vietnam is fast becoming one of the most visited countries in Southeast Asia. Authorities in the country have claimed they are determined to wipe out trade in rare animals to help give the nation a more wholesome image.
