Thailand to stage Loy Krathong festivities this month

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has released a bulletin stating that the Loy Krathong festival celebrations will be held later this month. Despite initially saying all this year’s celebrations for the festival had been cancelled, Thai authorities have given local councils the green light.

The only proviso is that any events staged are low key. This will probably mean the fireworks displays and mass release of khom loy sky lanterns which herald the coming of Loy Krathong will be toned down. Other key features including the release of the candle-lit model boats into rivers and lakes are being permitted.

Although Thais right across the kingdom celebrate Loy Krathong, a few cities lay on visual and cultural extravaganzas. The northern city of Chiang Mai tends to be the epicentre of the festivities. The TAT statement says the city will hold its colourful parade and there will be a whole host of other delights and spectacles for tourists to enjoy.

Sukhothai, Tak and Bangkok are other key locations getting ready to stage major Loy Krathong happenings. The dates for the main events vary slightly with each location, but will be between the 10 and 15 November.
