Thai rail operator confirms dates for debut of new carriages

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has released the dates of when its new rolling stock will be making their debut appearances. Passengers travelling between Bangkok and Chiang Mai and Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani will be able to enjoy the comforts of the new carriages from 11 November onwards.

SRT governor Wutthichart Kalyanamit told media sources on Wednesday that the new trains would replace old ones completely on some services to Chiang Mai and some carriages would be swapped on the Ubon Ratchathani route. He added that the new rolling stock would probably be introduced on two other key routes on 2 December.

These two routes are from Bangkok to Udon Thani and Nong Khai and from Bangkok to Suratthani and Hat Yai. Certain trains on both these routes will be made up of new locomotives and bogeys.

SRT has been testing the new rolling stock since the first batch of the total 115 units on order was delivered in July. The China manufactured carriages feature plush upholstery, USB mobile device charging sockets, personal entertainment screens, CCTV and wheelchair ramps.

A 12GO ASIA spokesperson explained that although the trains are new, travel tickets are still the old price. He continued by saying that tickets are on sale now. Our preview of the new carriages was supplied with courtesy by Khaosod.
