Phuket governor gives green light for popular Laguna Triathlon

The organisers of Phuket Island’s annual triathlon say they have been given permission to stage it this year. The committee had originally said they would probably have to cancel the event as the whole of Thailand was in mourning following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The committee released a statement late last week saying governor Chokchai Dejamornthan and the Tourism and Sports Ministry had stated that the triathlon should be staged according to the original schedule. This means it will be held on Sunday 20 November and begin at the island’s Laguna Resort complex.

The main event will see competitors take part in a 1.8km swim, a 50km cycle rally and a 12km run. Entrants can also register as a three-person relay team with each member allowed to join one of the three sections of the race. For those lacking the stamina to compete in the main triathlon there is a 6km fun run.

Athletes wishing to take part have until 13 November to register their entries on the official Laguna Phuket Triathlon website. Demand for tickets to Phuket is high in the days leading up to the triathlon. 12GO ASIA advises early bookings to ensure travellers get their chosen mode of transport on the date they want to go.
