Thai rail operator affirms passengers are covered by insurance

The governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has confirmed that all passengers using its services are covered by personal accident insurance. The insurance covers passengers while they are boarding and alighting trains as well as for the duration of their journeys.

Governor Wuthichart Kalyanamitr told reporters earlier this month that both passengers and rail employees were eligible to claim compensation if they had accidents. The maximum payout for an injury sustained while using SRT services is THB30,000. In the unlikely event of a death, families are entitled to claim THB300,000.

The governor explained that the insurance was being provided by Muang Thai Insurance and was part of the SRT policy of ensuring the welfare of passengers and employees. Before Muang Thai assumed responsibility for the insurance, SRT paid out claims itself, but the process could be protracted.

The SRT operates trains on four mainline routes from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Hat Yai as well as a number of regional services. 12GO ASIA offers online booking services for trains on most of the routes.
