Storm Rai unleashes heavy rain and flash floods across upper Thailand

The upper regions of Thailand have been hit with heavy rain over the past few days which has caused flooding in quite a few places. After making landfall in Vietnam on Monday, Tropical Depression Rai swept across to Thailand at an estimated speed of 20kph.

Rai struck Thailand yesterday and, although the weather people say it is pretty much a spent force, it is still raining heavily in most areas of Thailand above an east to west line passing through Bangkok. News sources in Chiang Mai reported flash flooding in districts including Mae On and Mae Chaem yesterday.

North of Nakhon Ratchasima and in Chaiyaphum, authorities reported there was flooding after three hours of non-stop, torrential rain. Thailand’s Meteorological Department says districts in 34 provinces are at risk of flooding or being swamped by a flash flood.

The National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department says it has placed emergency services and volunteers on standby and they are ready to help if needed. The main highways are not usually affected by monsoon season floods as they have functional drainage systems. The only issue for travellers is that journey times might be a little longer as bus drivers have to drive more slowly.
