Chinese holidaymakers still favour Northern Thailand

Thailand’s union of travel agents says the north of the country is still a preferred destination for holidaymakers from China. The president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents said a recent study had revealed Chinese people were still visiting and arrival figures were expected to reach a new high in the current fiscal year.

Charoen Wangananont expounded by adding the figures indicated that up to 13 million Chinese tourists would visit before year’s end. This is five million up on the arrivals for 2015 and comes despite criticism of the behaviour of some of the visitors from China.

Tourism agencies in the north say there are now more Chinese languages signs at key attractions like the White Temple in Chiang Rai and Chedi Luang Temple in Chiang Mai advising how to avoid faux pas.  For many Thais, the issue of Chinese visiting temples with just vests and shorts on has long been a sore point as it is considered sacrilegious.

The signs say people need to cover their shoulders and legs with the provided sarongs. The signs also state what is and what is not allowed at each different site. Temple custodians say that Chinese people do obey the rules once they understand them.
