Beached dolphin rescued by Thai navy at Koh Lanta

A Thai navy rescue patrol swung into action early on Sunday to help a dolphin that had washed up onto a beach near Krabi. The dolphin was stranded on Koh Lanta Noi Beach and when naval officers arrived they found it weak and unable to summon up the energy needed to get back out to sea.

Lieutenant Peerapon Pantasopon was in charge of the rescue team and he said beached dolphins stood no chance of being able to swim away from the shore. He noted that this particular situation had been exacerbated as the creature had been wounded.

The rescue team managed to get the stricken dolphin into a tank on the back of a pickup truck. Lieutenant Pantasopon said the dolphin was being taken back to the team’s base on the island and would be tended to by marine biologists from Phuket.

Dolphins can occasionally be spotted swimming through the waves of the Andaman Sea in this region of southwest Thailand. Krabi, Koh Lanta, the Koh Phi Phi Islands and Phuket are the key tourist destinations in the locality and 12GO ASIA serves them all with its convenient ticketing service.
