Phuket Airport rail developers told to go back to drawing board

Planners in charge of developing an airport rail link on Phuket Island have been told to revamp the proposal to make it safer for motorists. The Transport Ministry of Thailand claims the current blueprint for the tracks has too many level crossings.

Sirigate Apirat is managing the project on behalf of the Office of Transport and Traffic Planning and he told reporters the ministry had allowed another month for planners to re-draught the proposal. He added that ministry officials had expressed concerns about the risk of accidents if there were too many crossings.

Mr Apirat said his team had discussed the project with Transport Ministry secretary Peraphon Thawornsupacharoen. He continued by saying that although the permanent secretary had not given an official seal of approval, it had been included in the national project list for 2017.

The proposed light railway system could be a first for Phuket and the southwest region of Thailand. The exact route has still to be finalised, but if the project comes to fruition it will provide a practical link between the island’s international airport and Phuket Old Town. Phuket Real Estate Development has supplied an image of what the first Phuket trains could look like.
