Phuket authorities to act on high taxi fares

Authorities on Phuket Island say they are set to open discussions on reducing the flag-fares for taxis. The announcement came late last week after a meeting between the local governor and Land Transportation Division officials.

Governor Chamroen Thipyapongthada said the division would review the THB200 flag-fare cabbies are allowed to charge for the first two kilometres of any journey. He noted that the charge had been set in 2013 after vociferous complaints from tourists about the high prices for taxis and overcharging.

The governor continued by saying that dialog on the issue would be opened in July. He also explained that at the meeting it had been decided to make it a mandatory requirement for taxi-drivers to display fare scales in their vehicles.

The charges will be shown in English, Thai, Chinese and Russian script. The governor finished off by saying any taxi passenger who thought they had paid more than they should have done could call the Transportation Division hotline on 1584.

Phuket is probably the most visited tourism destination on Southern Thailand’s Andaman Sea shoreline. While its attractions are abundant it is not the cheapest place in the nation to take a taxi journey. The same two-kilometre trip in Bangkok would only cost THB35.

Bus and train fares are economically priced in Thailand. 12GO ASIA is able to supply tickets for travel between Bangkok, Phuket and all the other tourism hotspots in the country at prices that will definitely not break the bank.
