Bangkok Hua Lamphong rail station prepares for centenary party

Thailand’s national rail operator has scheduled activities to mark the centenary birthday of Hua Lamphong Station in central Bangkok. Saturday marks the anniversary of the auspicious day in 1916 when the grandiose structure welcomed its first passengers.

Rail workers have been busy giving Hua Lamphong a spring clean for the occasion. The landmark Renaissance-style facade of the grand old dame of Bangkok’s architectural gems has been adorned with colourful lights in preparation for the big day.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) boss Wootthichart Kallayanamit says visitors will be able to enjoy the rare sight of old steam engines and classic carriages at the station. An exhibition depicting the station’s and the SRT’s shared histories is also being set up.

A commemorative stamp is being issued and will be available at the station. Vendors will be on hand to serve up snacks and delicacies similar to those passengers of yesteryear would have enjoyed.

Hua Lamphong Station has been the focal point of the SRT network since the day it opened. Intercity express trains on the four main lines from Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Hat Yai all depart from and arrive at Hua Lamphong. 12GO ASIA offers ticketing services for these and most of the other train services in Thailand.
