Phuket Australian consulate opens for business

The new Australian consulate for southwest Thailand officially opened in Phuket Town yesterday. Announcing the inauguration of the consulate on Monday, foreign-minister Julie Bishop noted that it would offer services for Australians on Phuket Island plus Krabi and Phang-Nga provinces.

The press release noted that not all the services available at the Australian embassy in Bangkok would be provided in Phuket. Australian nationals will be able to renew their passports at the facility and it will offer general assistance plus limited document notarisation to start off with.

People wishing to apply for Australian visas or citizenship still have to do so in Bangkok. The consulate is located on the sixth floor of the CCM Complex on the Phuket Town bypass route (Chalermprakiat Rama 9 Road) and opens every day from 08:30 to 16:30.

The press release issued by the foreign-minister explained that the Phuket consulate was a part of an expansion designed to better serve the increasing number of Australians travelling overseas. The release noted that 900,000 Australians came to Thailand annually and a good third had Phuket and its environs on their travel itineraries.
