Singkhon border upgrade could pave way for foreign tourist entry

Provincial authorities in Prachuap Khiri Khan have approved a multi-million baht budget to upgrade buildings at a border crossing with Myanmar. Planning Officer Somboon Nuancharoen says new buildings will be constructed to house immigration, customs, and health and quarantine offices at Singkhon Pass.

He explained that enhanced facilities were needed to serve increasing trade and through traffic between Thailand and Myanmar. He added that the province’s Public Works Division had already secured a THB240 million budget for the development.

Mr Nuancharoen continued by saying the division needed to submit a formal request to the Thai Royal Forestry Department for the land required for the extension before any work could start. The actual design of the structures will be themed on national Thai farming heritage.

Prachuap Khiri Khan Province faces the Tanintharyi Region of Myanmar. A fact-finding delegation from the region is due to visit Singkhon to hold discussions on the way forward for the border crossing and whether to upgrade its status to permanent so that foreign tourists can use it.
