Divers salvage debris from coral reef at Phuket Nai Yang Beach

Divers joined a 100-strong crew of volunteers in removing rubbish from a coral reef close to Phuket’s Nai Yang Beach over the weekend. Divers pulled discarded fishing nets, ropes, bags and various other trash from the reef during the two-day Phuket Heart Coral initiative.

The campaign is designed to revitalise the marine bionetwork along the northwest shore of Phuket Island. The beach is close to Phuket International Airport and the cleanup was jointly organised by the facility’s management and rangers from Sirinath National Park.

At the opening ceremony on Saturday, the airport’s deputy-director stated that the locality attracted countless numbers of tourists every year and this placed a heavy burden on the ecosystem. Thani Chuongchoo continued by saying that removing flotsam from the sea and coral reefs was vital to ensure the marine environment was preserved for posterity.

Mr Chuongchoo finished off with the claim that the cleanup operation would promote a love for the island’s natural attractions and a desire to conserve them. Dive and snorkelling sites around Phuket are rated as some of the finest in Southeast Asia. 12GO ASIA offers a ticket reservations service which can help you get to Phuket easily.
