Backhoes clear debris from Phuket Surin Beach

Local authorities in Phuket have draughted in backhoes to clear debris from Surin Beach following last week’s demolition of illegal buildings on it. Ma-ann Samran is the head of Cherng Thalay Sub-district and he said the operation was proceeding smoothly and the two backhoes and cranes were being used to load up trucks to cart the rubble offsite.

Mr Samran carried on by saying that the mop-up operation would likely be complete by the middle of this week. He explained that the use of plant machinery was necessary as the pieces of debris were too big and heavy to be shifted by hand.

Once work is complete, the area will be spruced up in preparation for its rededication as Rajabhakti Beach Park. The park is set to be a lasting homage to King Bhumibol and his wife, Queen Sirikit.

Last Wednesday saw the demolition of 36 structures which had been illegally built on public land at Surin. The operation went ahead after final eviction orders had reached the compliance date. The Surin demolition was a part of the Thai government’s agenda of returning unlawfully occupied land to the Thai people.
