Phuket’s deputy-governor, Chokdee Amornrat, was on hand as a team comprising soldiers, police officers and workers with plant-hire machinery began taking apart the last 36 structures on public land at Surin. He said the action was in line with the Thai government’s policy of reclaiming beaches and other public land for the Thai people.
The government passed the resolution two years ago, but it has taken that amount of time to get the final go ahead to evict the encroachers. Cherng Thalay Sub-district officials put up final eviction notices on 21 March. Deputy-governor Amornrat noted that beaches at Lepang and Layan were next on the agenda and demolition operations would begin on Wednesday 27 April.
