Chiang Mai urban bus service gets new lease of life

A bus service that takes in most of the major city sights and attractions in Chiang Mai is due to start rolling again on Friday. The operators of the Khwan Wiang bus service temporarily shelved it a couple of months ago citing issues with funding and operational expenditure.

After taking delivery of a brand-new six-strong fleet of mid-sized coaches the service is good to go again. The fleet will get a shot in the arm in August with the arrival of eight more buses. The additional vehicles will enable the operators to increase service frequencies.

The proprietors of the bus service say having regular buses to all the key locations will help ease Chiang Mai’s traffic woes. They claim that eventually the buses could help cut the number of vehicles on the city’s roads by up to 20 per cent.

Kwan Vieng buses will run on a route that starts and ends at the village of the same name. On a circular route through the city, buses will stop at locations including Chiang Mai Airport, Chang Puak Gate, the Three Kings Monument, the Central Market and Chiang Mai Gate.

12GO ASIA does not sell tickets for local bus routes. What 12GO ASIA does do is sell tickets for intercity buses to Chiang Mai from Bangkok, Udon Thani, Mae Hong Son and many other places in the north and northeast regions of Thailand.
