Thailand enhances airports security screening after Brussels bombings

Airport authorities in Thailand have reacted to the Brussels bombings earlier this week by stepping up security screening. The director of the nation’s main air gateway, Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, revealed that security patrols and personnel were patrolling the passenger terminal and that stringent baggage checks were being conducted.

Sirot Duangrat noted that the airport had been on a Level III alert since the bomb attacks at Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine anyway. At Phuket Airport in southern Thailand, a senior official said its alert status was also Level III and asked passengers to report any unattended luggage or people behaving suspiciously.

Arkhom Termpittayapaisith is the national transport-minister and he says airports need to ensure all their CCTV cameras are fully operational and collecting video footage. At the Immigration Bureau, the commissioner says personnel have been instructed to thoroughly inspect the documents of all travellers entering and exiting Thailand at its airports and overland border crossings.

The commissioner said that officers would also be working with their Belgian counterparts to ascertain whether the suspected suicide bombers behind the Brussels Airport attack had ever been to Thailand. The Royal Thai Police has called for the lifting of inter-departmental red-tape so that all relevant Thai security agencies are able to share intelligence.
