Illicit shops and cafes on key Phuket Beach get marching orders

Cafés and shops that have been illegally built on one of Phuket Island’s most beautiful beaches have been given two weeks to move. The move follows an inspection by the National Ombudsman’s Office at Mai Khao Beach on Friday which determined the structures had been built on public property.

The area in question is near Jason Lake and nine illegally erected structures are involved. Prapan Kanprasang is the head of the local Ombudsman’s Office and he said the individuals responsible for erecting the makeshift structures had been given a 15-day deadline to take them down.

He continued by saying that if the structures were still there in 15 days workers from the Mai Khao Sub-district and Thalang District offices would bulldoze them. As well as the illegal shops near Jason Lake, the Ombudsman is coordinating checks with various local agencies to determine if other shops and eateries in Mai Khao are encroaching on public land.

Mai Khao Beach is on the shoreline of northwest Phuket and a less busy option for a holiday than say Patong or Karon. 12GO ASIA is your best source for tickets to Phuket and its stunning beach portfolio.
