Chiang Mai gets ready for launch of Thai balloon fest 2016

The northern city of Chiang Mai is preparing for the launch of the annual Thailand International Balloon Festival. The ninth balloon fest in the series is being staged on the campus of the city’s Payap University on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 March 2016.

The festival will feature colourful balloons piloted by more than 30 international fliers plus a whole gamut of other exciting entertainment. As an added bonus for this year’s festival, illuminated night-flying will be accompanied by music from the Lanna Orchestra.

Ajarn Bringkop Vora-urai, commonly known as professor Joe, will be leading the orchestra. He says the ensemble will be playing a number of unique compositions designed to convey the spirit of flight and the mood of the pilots in the vastness of the night sky.

Another highlight of the festival is the chance of sampling tasty dishes supplied by some of Chiang Mai’s top hotels. Expat residents who hail from nations as far apart as Sweden and India will have booths showcasing their own culture and traditions in the heritage zone of the fairground.
