Annual Chiang Mai book extravaganza gets underway

The annual book fair at Chiang Mai University started on Tuesday and will run through until next Wednesday.  Although the focus of the fair is on Thai language books, there are always plenty of new and second-hand books in English as well as selected other languages such as German and Chinese.

Stallholders tend to offer significant discounts on recommended retail prices and there are often some real bargains to be had. One or two stalls feature mixed box selections which are packed with used books typically retailing at THB20 apiece. The selections include text books, guide books and novels.

There are also new books selling at THB50-THB100 each. This is a good deal when compared to the average THB350 price of English-language novels at the Suriwong or Duangkamon (DK) book centres in town.

The organisers of the 22nd book fair say there are around 200 book stalls at present. Other booths have OTOP handicrafts, computer and mobile telephone accessories, gifts, snacks and beverages on offer. Chiang Mai University Book Fair is open from 09:00 to 20:00 until the 10 February.

Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s key destinations for tourists and its attractions cover everything from delicious cuisine to magnificent landscapes and a diverse range of activities. The city is 700kms north of Bangkok and 12GO ASIA is the most reliable source of tickets for travel between the two.
