Thailand to build cycleway linking central provinces and Bangkok

The director of Ayutthaya’s road and motorway division has confirmed the region will have a brand new designated cycleway by next year. Jiraphong Pinthabute stated the cycle path will run down from the Chao Phraya River dam in the province of Chai Nat to the Rangsit campus of Thammasat University in northern Bangkok.

On its 200km-long route, the cycleway will take in Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani. It will pass through the Ayutthaya’s former royal capital city and legendary landmarks like Wat Phanan Choeng in addition to Bang Pa-In Palace.

When the Thai Transport Ministry first announced the project late last year it said that the path would be single lane in each direction and be completely separate from any roads. The cost was put at THB1.5 billion. Media sources in Bangkok now say it will be surfaced with the rubber that the government has promised to buy from plantation owners in the south.

At present, the easiest means of exploring this or any other area of Thailand is by bus or train. Travellers looking for convenience when buying tickets will find the 12GO ASIA service is ideal.
