Northern Thai province inaugurates palaeontology museum

The Northern Thai province of Lampang has just held the official opening ceremony for its newest tourist attraction. The attraction is a palaeontology museum housing exhibits garnered from archaeological sites right across the nation’s 17 northernmost provinces.

Lampang Palaeontology is located in the district of Ko Kha and this is a few kilometres from Lampang Town’s central precinct and the mainline train station. The King Naresuan Monument is near the museum and a guiding landmark for visitors.

The displays and artefacts in the museum include pre-historic fossils and bones from dinosaurs and the elephant-like gomphotheres. There are displays explaining the cause of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as well as rock samples from local lignite mines.

Lampang is home to a number of unique draws, but foreign tourists usually just pass through on their way to Chiang Mai and the far north. Tourists in Lampang are able to enjoy anything from a ride in a horse-drawn carriage to visiting a beautiful Lanna temple and bathing in national park hot springs.
