Phuket pulls plug on snake show with biting python

Local authorities on Phuket have shut down a snake show centre at which a tourist was attacked by a python. Chalong Council has ordered the owners of the Soi Palai centre to close until they get the requisite licences to operate snake shows.

The check of the Bio Technology Company premises also revealed that the operators had added some buildings, but had not applied for planning permission. Confirming the temporary closure, Chalong’s assistant mayor said the complex had suitable safety equipment and followed all the rules.

He added that he believed the reticulated python had bitten the Chinese tourist because its handler had not kept it under control. He finished off by saying that once the centre obtained the correct permits and could demonstrate it had improved safety and security procedures the closure order would be reviewed.

Officials in Chalong say they plan to inspect other animal show venues and wildlife centres to ensure they are operating according to accepted protocols. Other local facilities with live animal shows include Nemo Phuket Dolphin and Phuket Crocodile World.

A reticulated python bit 29-year-old Chinese national Jin Jing at a Soi Palai snake show on 9 January. This sub-species of snake is not poisonous, but the wound was deep enough to warrant a visit to hospital.

Witnesses to the incident say Ms Jing was sitting in the front row when a handler offered her the opportunity of giving the python a kiss. As she bent forward to accept the offer, the reptile struck and buried its fangs in her nose.
