Russians name Thailand as number one global beach destination

A survey conducted by a leading Russian magazine found holidaymakers from the country consider Thailand is the top global beach destination. National Geographic Traveller Russia ran an online poll and received input from 240,000 correspondents for its 2015 awards.

A total of 26 countries with beach resorts featured in the rankings. With its number one position, Thailand beat fellow Southeast Asian nation the Philippines plus the old European favourites of Spain and Greece.

Arrival figures released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) seem to bear out the popularity of the country with Russia’s beach-lovers. The figures show that Thailand welcomed 1.6 Russians during 2014, although the number has declined percentagewise a little this year.

TAT Moscow Office director Eumporn Jiragalwisul said he was delighted Thailand had topped the poll of best beach destination. Russian tourists are regulars at Thailand’s key beach resorts of Phuket, Pattaya and Samui.

There are frequent flights from Russia to Bangkok and Phuket. During the Russian winter there are additional charter flights from Russia. Some of these land at Pattaya’s U-Tapao Airport.
