Travel Republic study finds Thai tuktuks more expensive than London buses

A UK based travel company has conducted a study that reveals travelling by tuktuk in Thailand is not as cheap as most people thought. Travel Republic weighed up the costs of travelling by 18 different modes of transport in common use around the world.

Mile-for-mile, travelling by tuktuk in locations such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai is more than double the cost of travelling on one of London’s iconic red, double-decker buses.  On average, passengers pay £0.94 (THB51) for each mile (1.6kms) travelled in a tuktuk. In comparison, it only costs £0.42 to travel a mile on a London bus.

These costs pale into insignificance when looking at the price for a mile on a Venetian gondola. This works out to a whopping £53 and almost 100 times the fare for a similar journey on a Chao Phraya River ferry in Bangkok.

The Travel Republic survey does not take into account the fact that buses travel on set routes and there might be 100 other passengers on it. Tuktuks go wherever the passenger wants to go and are designed to accommodate an absolute maximum of three people.
