Thailand reports on transport infrastructure improvements

Thailand’s new transport-minister has given a speech detailing current progress on the nation’s transport infrastructure improvements. During a live television broadcast on Sunday, Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said that a total of 17 different projects were ongoing and they would improve transportation options for both Thais and international tourists.

He said one of the key developments would be upgrading ports so that they were better able to serve cruise ships and their passengers. Government insiders say Thailand might usurp Singapore’s and Vietnam’s claims to the title of most popular Southeast Asian cruise destination.

In Bangkok, one of the focuses is on making Chao Phraya River ferries more convenient for passengers and commuters. To this end, the government has authorised the construction of an additional 19 jetties to serve express boats.

The plan is also to introduce an e-ticket system for Bangkok that will cover all modes of public transport. Instead of buying tickets each time they take ferries, buses or overground and underground trains, travellers will be able to pre-buy a common ticket for use on all. Bangkok’s two airports will also be expanded. Suvarnabhumi Airport’s passenger terminals will be enlarged and a third runway built. Don Muang Airport plus Phuket’s airport are undergoing renovations which are scheduled for completion over the next six months.
