Laos to construct leisure boat port in Vientiane

The municipal council in Vientiane has confirmed that it has given the green light for a port and recreation centre on the banks of the Mekong River. Local council chief Phokham Sayasone told media sources in the Vietnamese capital city the complex would be built in the southern district of Sisattanak.

He carried on by saying the wharf would be across from the Landmark Mekong Riverside Hotel. The chief noted that tourist themed projects were being built in many locations along the banks of the Mekong.

The council says a developer has already expressed interest in the project and is ready to sign a formal contract. Once the two parties have exchanged signatures, the contractor will carry out a feasibility study to see if the development will be worthwhile.

If the project comes to fruition, its pier will be able to accommodate riverboats with a capacity of 300 passengers. It will also include an immigration checkpoint and as yet unspecified venues for entertainment and shopping.

Sisattanak District is between the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge I and the downtown area of Vientiane. The Thai embassy in the city is a popular option for tourists in Thailand when they need to obtain new visas.

On the Thai banks of the Mekong, the Friendship Bridge is close to the town of Nong Khai. 12GO sells tickets for travel to Nong Khai from Bangkok, Chiang Mai and other major Thai cities.
