Thailand Myanmar agree visa free entry travel for own citizens

Thailand and Myanmar yesterday inked an agreement giving their citizens visa-free access upon arrival at the neighbouring nation’s airports. Effective 11 August 2015, Thai nationals landing at an airport in Myanmar will be granted entry without the necessity of having first obtained a visa.

The same applies to Myanmar passport holders landing at Thai airports. The visa exempt entries are valid for 14 days. The new regulation is only applicable to those flying to the other’s country and not to travellers crossing at land border outposts such as Mae Sai or Mae Sot

Most of the flights between the two nations depart from Bangkok’s two airports or Chiang Mai. In Myanmar, flights to and from Thailand mostly utilise Yangon Airport and, in a few cases, Mandalay Airport.

International travellers will still need visas to enter Myanmar, but not Thailand. Foreigners from around 40 per cent of the countries in the world entering Thailand are granted visa exempt entries valid for 15 days. Citizens of G7 group countries get 30 days.
