Chiang Mai to stage ASEAN culture and dining fest

The northern Thai city of Chiang Mai is the venue for a unique cultural festival this weekend. Visitors will be provided with insightful glimpses of the heritage, traditions and cuisine of the 10 nations that make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The cultural extravaganza has been organised by Chiang Mai’s Hotel Association and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The ASEAN One Multicultural Festival is a two-day event and will be held on the plaza in front of the city’s historic Thapae Gate beginning tomorrow, 10 July 2015.

TAT deputy-governor Juthaporn Rerngronasa said the festival would showcase the diverse cultures of each of the ASEAN nations. She noted that the fair was in keeping with the Thai government’s strategy of promoting what it has taken to calling ‘Thainess’ and that Thailand was also an integral cog in the whole entity that comprises ASEAN.

The festival venue will be separated into four zones with ASEAN One dedicated to performances by leading musical artistes from the 10 countries. ASEAN Pavilion is themed on cultural identity with photographs, archetypal handficrafts and dance performances.

We are ASEAN focuses on the daily lives of people living in the 10 countries with a highlight of a film comparing social differences and similarities. The ASEAN food precinct allows the rare chance of sampling gastronomic gems from across Southeast Asia in one place.
