Thailand introduces Muslim prayer room and halal food app

Earlier this week, Thailand unveiled an app designed to assist Muslims holidaying in the country. The app has inbuilt navigation controls that enable users to search for eateries that serve halal food in addition to shopping malls and hotels with dedicated prayer rooms on site.

The app is compatible with both Apple iOS and android platforms. It only offers English and Thai language capability at present, but the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) says it will add Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia to the options in the very near future.

According to figures released by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Thailand is second only to Singapore in the table of global destinations for Muslim holidaymakers. Commenting on the app launch, TAT governor Juthaporn Rerngronasa said Thailand had lots of attractions and sites for Muslims.

Apart from in the far south of the country, Thai people are mostly Buddhists. There are small enclaves in major cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai in which Muslims reside and there are mosques. The bigger airports have chapels for Muslims to pray in.
