More tourists expose bottoms at Angkor Wat

Three more foreign tourists are awaiting sentencing by a Cambodian judge for indecent exposure at the country’s ancient Angkor Wat temple complex. Two males, one from Argentina and the other from Italy, stand accused of baring their derrieres at the temple while a Dutch female has been charged with taking photographs of the exposed nether regions.

Local news reports state the three were nabbed at Ta Prohm Temple last Sunday and spent the night at police cells in Siem Reap. Late last week, prosecutor Keut Vannarareth said the trio had been questioned, but the presiding judge had still not made a decision over the incident.

This latest incident of foreign tourists being caught with their pants down at Cambodia’s holiest and most famous site is the fourth within the past six months. Earlier this year, on two separate occasions, three French nationals and two sisters from the US were fined, deported and declared persona non grata for pulling the same stunt.

Tourism official Ho Vandy says he does not understand the attraction of baring bottoms at a place Cambodians consider is enchanting and the embodiment of the country’s history. The Angkor Wat complex is administered by the Apsara Authority and spokesperson Sun Kerya says it is in the process of putting together a flyer listing ‘do nots’ for visitors.
