Halong opts for electric tourist taxis

The North Vietnamese city of Halong says it is all set to launch an electric vehicle service to transport tourists between its main attractions. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism says the service will operate on two fixed routes and should be up and running by the end of next month at the latest.

The first of the new Halong electric car routes will serve Bai Chay Pier, the main departure point for sightseeing odysseys around Halong Bay. The route will link the pier to Bay Chay Bridge and Marine Plaza.

The second line will serve Vincom Halong, Quang Ninh Museum, the central market and Bai Tho Mountain. Fares for the services will vary with the distance travelled, but up to a maximum of VND65,000. Each vehicle can accommodate up to 12 passengers.

Halong sits on the shores of Halong Bay and is the chief departure point for this UNESCO designated heritage site. Caves with unique stalactite and stalagmite formations, quaint fishing villages and the main islands of Tuan Chau and Cat Ba are among the delights that ensure the bay remains firmly ensconced on the itineraries of tourists and tour operators.

Once the routes are inaugurated, Halong will join a growing list of Vietnamese cities with electric tourist vehicles. Hanoi along with the smaller towns of Sam Son, Dong Hoi and Cua Lo have all launched services using these environmentally friendly vehicles.
