We booked 1st class sleeper and 12GoAsia was actually cheaper than what we were offered at the train station. We got the 22.20 SE1 train and it was very clean and pleasant.

Train #SE1 1st Class Sleeper, Vietnam Railways (Đường sắt Việt Nam), Dec 2, 2019
Train was all on time and relatively comfortable, had a better sleep than when we used the sleeper bus. Bottom bunks we’re great and lots of charging points and he table between the beds was a nice touch. Our bags fit under the bed so still had floor space. The train was quite loud from around 5am but all was good. Would recommend using the 1st class sleeper train for longer journeys

Train #SE1 2nd Class Sleeper AC, Vietnam Railways (Đường sắt Việt Nam), Nov 24, 2019
After accidentally booking to stay on the top bunk as it's not explained on the website we realised how much of a mistake we had made. The bunk beds are so hard to climb up into with only enough room to crouch down on the bed. I must of elbowed the ceiling atleast 5 times during the night. The aircon was also blowing straight on top of me and was freezing with no way of turning it down. We also saw cockroaches on the carriages. The staff didn't speak any english and we struggled to lift our bags up on to the top bunk. Also went to use the toilet during the night and a member of staff was urinating with the door open. Was no complentary water either. And again a member of staff came into the room to make the beds up and left the door wide open at 4 oclock in the morning.

Took a second class seat ticket to Dong Hoi Via 12go. The process was slick and easy and they sent an e-ticket which worked fine. All very straightforward and I would recommend.

Train #SE5 2nd Class Sleeper AC, Vietnam Railways (Đường sắt Việt Nam), Aug 13, 2019
2nd class sleeper from Hanoi to Dong Hoi. Arrived only an hour later then expected. Cabin cramped if sharing with others. After being asleep on the train for 3.5 hours we were woken up by a lady yelling at us in Vietnamese. Bewildered, we made gestures that we didn't understand, then she asked to see our tickets. She was meant to be looking after us for our trip but she was very stern, rude and bossy. A smile would have been nice. The bunks are extremely hard too so it was an uncomfortable 11.5 hours. If you don't mind missing the scenery on the way it's probably cheaper and more comfortable to take a flight.

Bus Standard AC, Hoang Long (Hoàng Long), Aug 9, 2019
We are leaving 2* as we got to place where we should. Other than that it was one of our worst experience in Vietnam so far. You can’t blame them for not speaking english but they are just not nice (we usually met very nice and helpful people in this country but not the drivers here). Bus was extremely dirty, nothing like pictures on their website. No free meal as advertised either but in so dirty place you couldn’t eat anyway. It is cheap so we understand it is not the best by any means. You can take it if you are broke but we will not use this company again...

1st class sleeper still has very hard beds. The train is extremely noisy and the beds are not well suited for persons over 1.8m tall. Despite this, it is a very good way to cover long distances.

Very nice staff, nice complimentary food and drinks. We had booked the wrong beds (we wanted 2 lower beds) so we asked at the desk if we could change it. Then we got a private room for 4 persons but only 2 beds where booked! So lucky. Beautiful trip and did manage to get some sleep.
