Kawthaung Myanmar – Best Value Hotels and Restaurants

There are a few spots to choose from when it comes to accommodation options in Kawthaung. Resorts situated on the local islands tend to offer much higher standards and correspondingly high prices, whilst in the town itself there are a few places that are suited to a small budget.

Budget

Two popular budget options are Honey Bear, a large building in the centre of town, and Penguin. These both offer good locations near to the waterfront, basic but reasonable standard rooms and fairly cheap prices. They are the most popular places for backpackers to spend a couple of days and can be noisy but are a good place to meet some fellow travellers in the area.

Mid-range

If you’d like to spend a bit more without breaking the bank then consider the Kawthaung or Garden hotels, which are a little more expensive and not in as good locations but good for a higher standard of accommodation.

Top end

If you do want to push the budget a bit, this is a pretty good place to do it. Being on the coast, the island resorts are picturesque and offer the best places to enjoy the local scenery but they are expensive. Whilst the Andaman Resort doesn’t have a beach, its 5* golf and casino hotel and facilities keep it consistently in the most popular accommodation options in the area. If you want to party and you’re not on a tight budget this is a good choice.

Other upmarket options include Victoria Cliff Resort, which offers some boat and snorkelling tours and is located near to the local airport. It is known for expensive all inclusive options so again, if money isn’t a concern, it could be a good place to splash out for a few nights.

Where to eat in Kawthaung

There are plenty of eateries in town, many loved by locals and offering extremely cheap food such as Burmese noodles for just 30 cents. If you’re feeling brave you can try one of the many local curry houses, which serve delicious traditional meals but can be a little dodgy when it comes to hygiene, particularly later in the day.

For coffee, juice and simple snacks and meals, there are several options that are popular with tourists visiting Kawthaung. Waiyantan and Love Coffee shop are both good choices if juice, coffees and a generally cheap place to hang out for a while are what you’re looking for. You can also find ice creams, yoghurt drinks and cold drinks for those warmer days. Honey Bear serves basic food at reasonable prices and is also a popular spot for a coffee.

The best mid range eateries that are western friendly and offer a selection of international options including Burmese, Thai, Chinese and Western dishes are Buddy Cafe and Mark Restaurant.

The former is owned by a Thai expat and serves up some really tasty Thai food, although it is a little pricier than Marks. It has air-con, menus in English and wifi, accounting for its ongoing popularity, as well as serving various bakery options alongside their main menu. All in all this is a great choice for lunch or dinner and is a welcoming spot for tourists.

Mark Restaurant is a popular drinking spot later into the evening, and while it serves good food you’ll usually find travellers here enjoying a few Myanmar beers.

Finally, there is the option to splash out and treat yourself to some fine dining, which might be just what you need after all that street food! Victoria Cliff is again the chosen spot for anyone looking to treat themselves to a really good meal, although you will need to budget accordingly as it’s certainly not for those on a tight budget.
