Kampong Chhnang Hotels, Guesthouses and Restaurant

When it comes to accommodation in Kampong Chhnang there is a surprisingly good amount of choice. Still, this only really means that you can choose between different guesthouses and some small hotels, so don’t come expecting luxury accommodation of any kind.

Budget

If you are on a budget and don’t mind basic guesthouses, then you will find quite a reasonable selection here. For under USD10 you can head to the Garden Guesthouse (C419 Phsar Dam Rong Street) where you will find a typical backpacker haunt with a nice garden area and rooms that have air conditioning, hot water, and Wi-Fi. There is also a nice cafe and this is one of the best budget choices in town.

If you don’t mind being a little further away from the action then around 3 kilometres out of town you will find Neang Puon’s Home (Route 5) which is a guesthouse that also boasts a pool (a rarity in Kampong Chhnang). If you are going to rent a bicycle or motorbike then this is a fabulous choice and rooms have air conditioning, Wi-Fi, cable television, and hot water.

Also in this category is Phkay Proeunk Guest House (Route 5) which is newly renovated and has some nice, if stark, rooms with hot water, Wi-Fi, cable TV, air conditioning and large communal balconies where you can watch the sunset.

Mid-range

If you are after something a little more upscale, then for under USD35 you can try one of the town’s hotels. Possibly the best of these is Sovannphum Hotel (Route 5) which has quaint rooms with Wi-Fi, cable televisions, fridges, and hot water.

Another spot is Somrongsen Hotel (Phsar Krom Street) which also has hot water, air conditioning, cable TV, and fridges. One of the highlights of this hotel is that it is right in the centre of town so if you are not planning on hiring a bicycle then you can walk almost everywhere from here.

Places to Eat in Kampong Chhnang

Unfortunately one of the few downsides of Kampong Chhnang is the food. There is not a huge amount of choice and the quality, while not terrible, is not as good as many other places in Cambodia. As such, you may struggle to find somewhere that serves you a truly memorable meal.

Probably the best place in town, or the most famous anyway, is Sok San Restaurant (Route 5). Here you will find Khmer and Vietnamese dishes featuring noodles or rice and they also have beer for around USD2 per bottle. The food is good but there is not a huge selection to choose from.

If you are staying at a guesthouse or hotel along Route 5 then consider stopping off at Angkor Thmey Restaurant which is one of the better restaurants along this road (and there are quite a few). Here you will find typical Khmer dishes like stir fries, soups, and rice and noodle dishes, and you can expect to pay around USD2-4 for a meal.

If you are in the mood for some Western fare then opposite Sok San you will find the Phnom Meas Bakery (Route 5) which has cakes, pastries, and pizza, as well as iced coffees and juices. It’s a good choice if you are tired of rice and noodles and costs around USD4 for a meal.

Another good option in town is the local market, located down by the waterfront. Here you will find all manner of tasty treats including grilled meats and even things like baguettes stuffed with a variety of fillings. Fish and seafood also feature heavily here although seating usually comes in the form of plastic chairs and tables, if at all.
