Southern Thai town prepares for kite expo

The southern Thai town of Satun is getting ready to stage its 35th kite jamboree. The annual airborne extravaganza is scheduled for the weekend of 6 to 8 March 2015 at the town’s airfield.

The Satun Kite Festival is a perennially popular event that regularly attracts kiting enthusiasts from all over Asia as well as numerous visitors. The sight of kites representing komodo dragons and various cartoon characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants swooping through the sky is a delight for young and old alike.

Kiting masters usually coordinate a mass airborne display during the proceedings and this can see thousands of kites in the sky at a time which really does make for an explosion of colour. Kites are not the festival’s only draw and there is a beauty contest plus stalls selling the usual southern Thai beverages and snacks.

In the evenings, cultural shows and performances by Thai musical artistes are scheduled for the main stage. Master kite-makers will also be on hand to give demonstrations and insights into how to build kites that can fly gracefully and not crash-land as soon as they are three metres above ground.
