Myanmar to develop unspoilt Mon State beach

Authorities in Myanmar’s Mon State have announced the development of a pristine stretch of beach close to Moulmein. An official attached to the local authority, Min Nwe Soe, says the management contract for the hotel precinct at Kabyar Wa has already been awarded to domestic firm Aurun Limited.

Min Nwe Soe is the planning and economics advisor for Mon State and he told local reporters that the project to turn the 13kms of land beside Kabyar Wa’s beaches into a holiday resort would take at least two years. He added that the project would progress in three stages and Aurun was coordinating the first phase right now.

Company CEO Htay Thwin says the US$12 million project will cover the initial infrastructure as well as the cost of building 100 premium-class bungalows and several hotels with a three to four star rating. The CEO added that he was holding talks with several foreign investors with a view to obtaining funding for specific properties.

Kabyar Wa is a few kilometres to the south of the state capital of Moulmein and until recent years was one of the regions of Myanmar that foreigners were not allowed to travel to. The Mon National Liberation Army had waged a long campaign against the national government, but in February 2012 agreed a truce.
