Vientiane increases smoke-free parks

Municipal authorities in Vientiane have announced that another city park is to join the growing list of locations where smoking is banned. Officials in the Lao capital launched the campaign to introduce smokeless zones back in 2009 and Saysettha Park is all set to be the latest addition to them.

Saysettha Park is the main park giving access to Laos’s most famous monument, Pha That Luang, in eastern Vientiane. The monument is high on the list of things to do for both domestic and international tourists when visiting the city.

Designating Saysettha as a no-smoking area is in keeping with the campaign’s slogan of clean, green, pleasant and peaceful. Three years ago, the Mekong riverside park of Chao Anouvong was the first city location to introduce a no-smoking policy.

Hotels, eateries and bars were supposed to bring in no-smoking policies, but local reporters say this has met with limited success. Municipal officials say they plan to meet with local health professionals to ramp up the campaign and encourage more establishments to ban smoking on their premises.
