Yogyakarta's New Airport Opens Amidst Covid-19 Crises

In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, Yogyakarta's newly built International Airport (YIA) officially commenced operations last Sunday, March, 29.

All flights from Yogyakarta's former principal Adisutjipto International Airport are now transferred to the new airport which has already started operating in full capacity. No special opening ceremony was held due to the current situation with the pandemic.

The YIA will be open round the clock, serving 54 flights, 48 of which are domestic flights, both arriving and departing, and six international flights to the neighbouring countries of Malaysia and Singapore.

The estimated capacity of the airport is 20 million passengers a year what is a whooping increase compared to the Adisutjipto airport's 1.8 million passengers. The new airport has one passenger terminal which occupies 219,000 square metres.

The airport is located  45 kilometers from Yogyakarta in Kulon Progo regency. It features a 3,250-m-long and 45-m-wide runway and can accommodate larger aircraft including Boeing 777-300 and Airbus A380.

Starting from tomorrow, the national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and its low-cost subsidiary airline Citilink Indonesia will operate all inbound and outbound flights to/from Yogyakarta from YIA.
