Silom Road Sunday street market opens

The governor of Bangkok was on hand for the ceremony to open a street market on the city’s Silom Road last Sunday. MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) hoped the weekly market would prove a major draw for Bangkokians and international visitors alike.

He continued by saying that eventually the street market would feature up to 1,000 vendors and products from each of Bangkok’s 50 different districts would be on offer. Prior to the commencement of the market, the BMA had stated that the market would run every Sunday apart from over the new year holiday.

The BMA also said that if the Silom Road market proved successful, they would consider setting up street markets in other areas of the city. The Silom market occupies the stretch of the main city thoroughfare from Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Junction up as far as the Dusit Thani Hotel.

The road is closed to through traffic from 15:00 onwards every Sunday to allow vendors the time to set up their stalls. Among the goods on offer are inimitable souvenirs, T-shirts with unique logos and designs, and leather accessories. Thai speciality snacks sold at the market make great appetisers before heading to one of the restaurants in the nearby Patpong entertainment zone.
